Some PhD programs allow students to obtain an MPhil degree (or occasionally an MS degree) "on-the-way" to their PhD.  This is different than being awarded a different Master's degree in that all PhD coursework is applied toward the Master's and it does not require an additional admissions application.

In order to signal to the Office of the Registrar that a student is ready to be awarded their MPhil, the school or department must complete the Master's Application milestone during the term the MPhil or other associated Master's degree should be awarded.

The milestone must be complete prior to the conferral date for that term.  Conferral dates are published on the Applying for Graduation webpage.

For additional assistance on milestones please see Reviewing & Completing Milestones.
