Who is eligible for an NYU HPC account?

NYU HPC resources are available at no charge to full-time NYU faculty (other than NYU Medical School).

NYU HPC resources are also available at no charge to other NYU staff, students and collaborators (including NYU Medical School) who have sponsorship from a full-time NYU faculty member.

All sponsored accounts will be created for a period of 12 months, at which point a renewal process is required to continue to use the clusters. (TODO link to account expiration procedures)

The BuTinah cluster at NYUAD is also available without sponsorship to NYU Medical School researchers. (TODO is my interpretation correct here?)

Eligible users can request an account by following the instructions here (TODO link)

What is "faculty sponsorship"?

Full-time NYU faculty can approve access for ("sponsor"):

  • Degree program students
  • Visiting scholars
  • Research staff
  • NYU Medical School faculty, staff and students
  • Other NYU staff/affiliates with a NetID
  • Non-NYU researchers with whom they are actively collaborating

Full-time NYU faculty can also

Sponsorship Responsibility

HPC faculty sponsors are expected to:

  • Approve/disapprove sponsored users' association with you
  • Approve/disapprove the purpose for which user is requesting an account on NYU HPC resources
  • Agree to supervise the sponsored individual, to the extent necessary, to ensure proper use of the NYU HPC resources and compliance with all applicable policies.
  • Respond promptly to account-related requests from HPC staff

How to get an HPC account

  1. Before requesting an account, check if you already have one.
You can check this by attempting to log in to the cluster, according to the instructions at "Logging in to the NYU HPC Clusters".

If you don't have an account already:

  2. First you need a valid NYU NetID
Your HPC sponsor (TODO link to sponsorship guidelines) can request one for you here.

  3. Next you need a valid NYU Google account to receive emails, as does your HPC sponsor - contact us at hpc@nyu.edu  if you need assistance with this.

  4. Log into the NYU Identity Management service (IIQ):

When you log in to IIQ you will see a screen like the image below. Click "Request/Renew HPC Account"

  5. You should see a form like this:

If you are not a full-time NYU faculty member, you will need an NYU faculty member to sponsor your application. This is probably your thesis supervisor, or NYU collaborator.

  6. Hit submit, and the request will go to your sponsor to approve (if applicable), and your account will be created, usually within a day of being approved.

You will be returned to the dashboard, and now you should see your request in the "Pending Approvals" tables, as shown below:

  7. If after a few days you still do not have an account, check with your sponsor - they may have missed a step in the approval process. If you are still stuck, contact us at hpc@nyu.edu for assistance.

For full-time faculty - How to approve an HPC account request

When someone nominates you as their HPC sponsor, you should be notified by email. You can also log into IIQ at any time, and if you have a request awaiting your approval, it will appear in your "Actions Items" box

  1. Log into the NYU Identity Management service (IIQ) and check for requests awaiting your approval in the "Action Items" box:

If your sponsee has contacted you about a request awaiting approval, but you do not see it in this list, the request may have expired or they may have missed a step when submitting their request. In either case they will need to resubmit their request according to the the instructions at (TODO link).

  2. Click on the action item to see details as per the image below. If you are happy to approve the request, click the "ok" button.

  3. You will see a dialog in which you can add a comment, if you wish. You can also leave this empty. Click "Add Comment" to close the dialog box:

  4. Finally, hit "Complete" to finish the approval process. The account will then be created automatically within a few hours.

  5. If you have any difficulties or questions, contact us at hpc@nyu.edu for assistance.
